The circumpolar status of muskoxen is a conservation success story. The recovery of populations in Canada and Greenland and their re-colonization of former ranges is partly due to protection from unregulated hunting. Re-introductions have been successful in Alaska, Russia, west Greenland, and Quebec, though less so in Norway. Canada: Of the world’s 150,000 muskoxen, 130,000 are found in Canada’s Northwest and Nunavut Territories.
